The Contract Prep & Score usability study was conducted to create an initial product for internal Optum users. The goal of the study was to determine if a prototype was useful and well organized.
The methods used in this study include persona development, user interviews and an ethnographic study.
Key findings included the need for a quick view dashboard, a hierarchy of contract statistics, and averaged risk scores across that hierarchy.
Interviews were initially conducted to understand the purpose and needs of the Contract Prep & Score dashboard. Three user personas were identified three individuals were interviewed, one representing each persona:
The following questions were discussed in each interview:
What types of users will utilize the dashboard?
What information would each user like to see on the dashboard?
How does the team currently gather the information that will be on the dashboard?
What data is available to display on the dashboard?
Do you have any documents that will help guide the dashboard development?
After collecting requirements and documents from the three persona representatives, I created several initial prototypes using Balsamiq.
It became apparent that the Software Engineer user persona represented over one half of all users. Thus, an ethnographic study was conducted to observe the Software Engineer's contract creation process and understand valuable metrics for this user type.
The interviews and ethnographic study resulted in the creation of a clickable prototype:
The clickable prototype provided the following recommendations:
Display a quick view dashboard homepage that is valuable for all three user personas.
Include dropdowns which allow the user to view a hierarchy of contract statistics on the national, regional, state, and contract levels. and averaged risk scores across that hierarchy
Ultimately, the Contract Prep and Score dashboard was developed and very closely followed the prototype guidelines:
